Dinner parties are the perfect time to reconnect with friends and family over a delicious home-cooked meal and drinks afterwards. Besides not having to worry about parking and crowds, you’ll be able to take things slow and really focus on having a good time with your guests.

This is why, cocktails are the perfect accoutrement to any house or dinner party that you’re hosting with friends or family. From the classic mojito for those warm summer months to the comforting Bangalore Old-Fashioned during the monsoon, cocktails can really spice up a gathering.

So ready up a pitcher and start blending some ice as we take you through 5 must-have cocktails that will have you itching for a drink.

1. Vodka Screwdriver

Oftentimes, the best-tasting recipes are the simplest ones that highlight the quality and freshness of key ingredients. The vodka Screwdriver or simply known as the Screwdriver is one such example.

Concocted by American oil workers toiling in the Persian Gulf, the Screwdriver is one of the world’s most popular cocktails and with good reason.

Mix 1 part vodka with 2 parts orange juice, mix well, serve in a highball glass, pour over ice and voila; you’ll have a simple yet refreshingly delicious cocktail that’s perfect as an after dinner aperitif or a starter for an evening at home with friends.

Forget the carton box variety orange juice and go with fresh-squeezed orange juice with the pulp for added flavour. Most vodkas would do in a pinch but this writer has had the best experience with Absolut and 42 Below.

2. Long Island Iced Tea

Don’t let the name fool you, this tea packs a serious punch and should not be taken lightly.

To a highball glass, mix equal parts tequila, vodka, white rum, triple sec and gin together before topping it all off with sweet and sour mix or syrup and cola. Garnish with a lemon slice to taste and mix well together.

The beauty of LIIT is that it can be tailored to suit the taste of the individual drinking it. With some practice and plenty of patience, you’ll have no trouble mixing up a LIIT that is to die for. The recipe can be found here.

3. Mojito

Deriving its name for the African word for magic, there truly is something magical about the mojito.

White rum, cane sugar, lime juice, spearmint leaves and plenty of crushed ice come together to bring you a sweet, refreshing drink with just a bite of alcohol at the end.

Beloved by pirates since the golden age of piracy and enjoyed by Earnest Hemingway and James Bond, the mojito is tropical exotica in a highball glass. Easy to make and the perfect cooler for hot Indian summer nights, nothing could be more enjoyable than a white rum mojito.

For something a bit more local, the JalJeera mojito may be just what the doctor ordered.

4. Gin and Tonic

Clear, sharp and refreshing, the gin and tonic is a classic cocktail that was previously enjoyed by British officers looking to stave off quinine in the 1900s.

Equal parts gin and tonic water with a lime garnish are served over crushed ice in this drink. If you don’t like the taste of tonic water you can always replace it with 7-Up to create the ever popular gin fizz.

5. Bangalore Old-Fashioned

While the Old-Fashioned may be a true classic cocktail popular with fans of whisky, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t shake things up a little.

The Bangalore Old-Fashioned is an Indian-inspired cocktail that makes use of exotic Indian spices to add a layer of depth and warmth to an old favorite.

Replacing the traditional whisky, Indian rum is used in this cocktail and stirred in with a combination of specially prepared Garam Masala syrup and bitters for a drink which is the perfect companion for those rainy monsoon nights.

Ideal for a relaxed dinner with friends or family to the nice and easy vibes of any after-party, the Bangalore Old-Fashioned is our drink of choice.

Food and cocktails are best enjoyed with good company in a comfortable and relaxed environment i.e. your home. Given the restrictions that the government has in place, it’s best to stay home and sit things out.

If you love sports and are excited for them to return, you should guess the NBA expert picks from your sofa, since you can’t go to the games, with a nice cocktail in your hand. Even if you can’t go out, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a party at home instead.
